Jesus Teaches us to pray with persistence

Read Luke 18:1-8

The parable of the persistent widow and the unjust judge is a powerful lesson on the importance of prayer and faith. Jesus teaches us and his disciples about the need to continually seek God’s justice and not lose heart, even in the face of adversity.

This is a parable we need these days! In a world teeming with disappointment and hopelessness, turn to the beginning of chapter 18.  Jesus narrates a parable about the kind of everyday corruption that marginalizes those who can least afford it. It is a surprising parable telling of Jesus’ aim is to encourage prayer and persistence.

Imagine a widow who keeps going to a judge, asking for justice in her case. The judge initially ignores her, but because of her persistence, he grants her request.  This story conveys the message that we should keep praying and never lose hope in God’s justice, even when it seems like our prayers are not being answered.

Have you ever felt discouraged in your prayers, thinking they are not making a difference?

This parable reminds us that our prayers do matter and that God listens to us. So, keep praying with faith and perseverance, knowing that God is just and will answer in His perfect timing. Just like the widow in the parable, continue to approach God with confidence and trust, knowing that He will bring about justice and resolution in our lives. This parable is a beautiful reminder of the power of persistent prayer and unwavering faith in God’s goodness and justice.

This parable calls us to examine our own prayer lives. Are we persistent in our prayers, or do we give up when answers are delayed? Do we rest on the assurance that God, who is infinitely more just and loving than the unjust judge, will respond to our persistent prayers?

Think of your daily hustle at work or the dedication to your family and friends.  Can we be like the persistent widow and keep pushing for justice?   Let her unyielding spirit inspire you to keep praying and seeking what’s right. Don’t let setbacks deter you; stay relentless. Will you stand firm and pursue your goals with the same persistence?

Jesus gives part of his interpretation of the parable starting in verse 6.” Listen to the judge”, he points out.   If even this corrupt judge can be made to listen to the appeals of the aggrieved, how much more will a God who reigns with justice, who loves with grace, listen “to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night” (verse 7). God is not like this judge at all, and neither does God answer our prayers as a concession. God receives our supplications with love, answers them with care.

This parable leads us to focus on the faithful widow. Her persistence in a broken system is a model for us to follow, knowing as we do that God’s economy of grace is not ruled by the whims of a judge. Her persistence is an emblem of faithfulness. Her boldness is rewarded. Her courage to draw upon the seemingly meager “weapons of the weak” in a system that would sideline her and deny her justice is a path to follow as we await our deliverance. Perhaps this is precisely the kind of faith Jesus wonders if he will find on his return (verse 8)—a faith that demands justice in a world coursing with injustice, a faith that persists in seeking life even in systems seemingly ruled by the forces of death, a faith that looks to God’s promises and lives as if they will be fulfilled today.

Let us pray:

Lord, You know the struggles we face; You understand our weariness and frustrations. We often wander in doubt, questioning whether our cries reach Your ears. May we find renewed courage and commitment, fortified by the knowledge that our persistence in prayer is a declaration of faith.  When clouds of despair overshadow our hearts, we ask that You remind us of Your promises, ensure us that   as we seek justice for ourselves and others, may our prayers rise like incense to Your throne, filled with hope and anticipation of Your righteous outcomes. Heavenly Father, rekindle the flame of faith within our hearts. Let us commit to praying with perseverance and trust, confident in the knowledge that God hears and cares. May we not only seek justice for our own lives but also advocate tirelessly for those who bear injustice in silence. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
